May is off to a fantastic start, and we have lots of exciting events happening at school in May and June. Please take note of the activities below and join us in celebrating a fun and active spring at RMS.

In-Line Skating

The in-line skating residency was a hit! Students learned new skills, built confidence, and stayed active while having a great time. Thank you to families for joining us for the Family In line Skate night. We are very grateful to the RMS School Council for funding this activity.

Give Reading a Shot Pep Rally

We were thrilled to welcome members of the Calgary Stampeders to our school this month for the Give Reading a Shot Pep Rally. The players shared inspiring messages and answered thoughtful questions from our students. Students were excited to be able to take home a special book funded through The Education Partnership Fund.

Telus Spark Field Trip

Education Matters is generously funding an opportunity for each RMS class to visit Telus Spark Science Centre this spring. We still need parent/guardian volunteers to make this trip possible. Please let your child’s teacher know if you can volunteer for the trip as soon as possible. The dates of the trip are May 13 for Grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and May 14 for Grades K, 1, 2, and PLP.

Jellybean Dance

School Council is excited to invite all RMS families to the annual Jellybean Dance on Thursday, May 14 from 6:30 – 8:00pm in the RMS gym. Families are encouraged to come to enjoy an evening of music, dancing, and community connection. This is a wonderful opportunity for students, parents/guardians, and siblings to have fun together.

Read with Me

Did you know that the Calgary Public Library offers a free Library program that supports your child’s reading development in a fun and engaging way. They will match your child with an adult volunteer from your community who wants to help your child become a more confident reader. See the attached document for more information on the program.

Planning Ahead to 2026-27

Moving On?

If you know that their child will not be attending Roland Michener School next year, please email Melanie Haniak (mlhaniak@cbe.ab.ca). Letting us know helps us to plan our staffing and class lists for next year.

Class Requests

As we look ahead to next year, teachers carefully create class lists. We work on ensuring there is a balance of student strengths and needs and personalities. Teachers are thoughtful and careful about placing students into classrooms with friends and classmates who will support their learning. Students may not get to be with all of their friends, but teachers ensure that students have friends in their next class. We value parent/guardian input into our class list decision making process. If you have a request for your child for next year, please email principal Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca). All requests must be centred on student learning, rather than personal preference. Requests for individual teachers will not be considered, rather, requests need to be focused on the most effective learning environment for your child. For example, parents/guardians might request that their child be placed in a classroom with a teacher who is easy-going, or a teacher with firm expectations. Requests for students to be placed with or away from specific students will occasionally be considered. For example, parents/guardians might request their child be separated from their cousin if they tend to get into mischief together. We will do our best to honour parent/guardian requests if they fit the parameters above, but please note that we cannot promise that all requests will be fulfilled. Unfortunately, verbal requests to teachers or administrators are not able to be considered. Please ensure you submit any requests in an email to Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca) before June 5, 2026. If you have any questions about class lists or class configurations, or organization for next year, please reach out to Terrie or Megan.
