Alien In-Line Skating is Coming Up!

RMS students will have an opportunity to build their skills with Alien In-Line Skating. Instructors will focus on teaching students how to learn to in-line skate in a safe and fun environment. Students can bring their own bike helmet to wear for in-line skating. In-line skates from home cannot be used. Alien In-Line will run from April 27 - May 6. This opportunity is funded by the RMS School Council.

Family In-Line Skate Night hosted by RMS School Council

This year, families are also invited to join us for a Family In-Line Skate Night on Thursday, April 30 at RMS. This special event is being organized and hosted by the RMS School Council. A sign-up form will be shared closer to the date. Please note that students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to participate in the In-Line Skate Night opportunity. School Council is requesting two parent volunteers to support the Family In-Line Skate Night. If you are able to volunteer for the In-Line Skate Night, please let us know at rmscouncil@hotmail.com.

YMCA Healthy Living School

Students in grades 4 and 5 had a great experience at YMCA Healthy Living School. This experience helped students develop lifelong habits for health and wellness. Through fun and engaging activities, including wall climbing, skating, swimming, journaling, and visiting the Calgary Public Library, students learned about physical health, emotional well-being, teamwork, and making healthy choices both at school and at home.

Grade 6 Students Visit Egbert

Our Grade 6 students have now visited Dr. Egbert twice as part of the upcoming transition to junior high. Students toured the school, met some of the teaching staff, and learned about new opportunities they will experience next year. These visits are a great chance to build excitement and ease the transition for our grade 6 students. There is one more visit planned for later in the spring.

Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School Open House for Grade 6 Students and Families

On Thursday, May 7 from 4:30pm – 6:00pm, grade 6 students and their parents/guardians are invited to visit Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School. This is a wonderful opportunity for new students to visit their future school with their families. The amazing staff of Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert School will be present to meet students and their families and answer any questions. The evening is an informal, meet-and-greet, drop-in style event. Attendance is recommended, but not mandatory.

Give It a Shot! Pep Rally

To build school spirit and celebrate our school community, RMS students and staff will gather together for the “Give It a Shot!” pep rally on Tuesday, April 28 at 1:00pm. The gym will be filled with cheering, music, and a few surprise Stampeder players! Students are encouraged to wear red and black and/or Stampeder gear. Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend the pep rally.

Maatoomsii’Pookaiks Day

On the upcoming Maatoomsii’Pookaiks (Children First) Professional Learning Day (April 24), all This CBE staff, regardless of role, will participate in developing foundational knowledge of Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing. As a learning organization, we are committed to acknowledging and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, which includes providing Indigenous Education professional learning for all staff (Call to Action #57).

Telus Spark

Education Matters is generously funding an opportunity for each RMS class to visit Telus Spark Science Centre this spring. We will need parent/guardian volunteers to make this trip possible. Please let your child’s teacher know if you can volunteer for the trip. May 13 - Grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and May 14 - Grades K, 1, 2, and PLP.

Planning Ahead to 2026-27

Moving On?

If you know that their child will not be attending Roland Michener School next year, please email Melanie Haniak (mlhaniak@cbe.ab.ca). Letting us know helps us to plan our staffing and class lists for next year.

Class Requests

As we look ahead to next year, teachers carefully create class lists. We work on ensuring there is a balance of student strengths and needs and personalities. Teachers are thoughtful and careful about placing students into classrooms with friends and classmates who will support their learning. Students may not get to be with all of their friends, but teachers ensure that students have friends in their next class. We value parent/guardian input into our class list decision making process. If you have a request for your child for next year, please email principal Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca). All requests must be centred on student learning, rather than personal preference. Requests for individual teachers will not be considered, rather, requests need to be focused on the most effective learning environment for your child. For example, parents/guardians might request that their child be placed in a classroom with a teacher who is easy-going, or a teacher with firm expectations. Requests for students to be placed with or away from specific students will occasionally be considered. For example, parents/guardians might request their child be separated from their cousin if they tend to get into mischief together. We will do our best to honour parent/guardian requests if they fit the parameters above, but please note that we cannot promise that all requests will be fulfilled. Unfortunately, verbal requests to teachers or administrators are not able to be considered. Please ensure you submit any requests in an email to Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca) before June 5, 2026. If you have any questions about class lists or class configurations, or organization for next year, please reach out to Terrie or Megan.
