During this event, families will have the chance to engage in many different interactive literacy activities, develop a deeper understanding of how students build their literacy skills and understandings at school, and discover new ways to support literacy at home. The Calgary Public Library Big Book Truck will also be at RMS during the Literacy Night for families to check out.

We hope to see all RMS families at Literacy Night for a fun and engaging night focused on growing a love of literacy and learning together. More information will be shared with families closer to the date.

Upcoming Learning Celebrations

Students have been working hard all year in class and we are excited to share their learning and progress! This spring, each grade team will be hosting a Learning Celebration, families will be invited to visit classrooms to explore and celebrate student learning. These celebrations are a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s learning and celebrate their growth. Teachers will be sending invitations with specific dates and times, so keep an eye out for more information from your child’s teacher.

Strengths-Based Parenting Session

On the evening of April 30, Recovery Alberta Presenting is presenting a session on Vaping. Across Canada, e-cigarette use, also known as vaping, is reaching new heights among teenagers. This presentation will focus on common devices used for vaping, substances vaped such as nicotine and cannabis, and the health risks associated with vaping. Information will be shared on how to engage in challenging conversations with youth on vaping. All RMS parents/guardians are invited to the session at 6:30pm on April 30.

Nations Vision

Nation’s Vision, a mobile eye care clinic, will be visiting RMS from May 12 – 20, 2005. Nation's Vision (NV) is a multidisciplinary portable eyecare team that is comprised of assistants/technicians, opticians, orthoptists, optometrists, and ophthalmologists. Nation’s Vision provides children with free-of-charge annual recommended comprehensive eye exams directly within the school. Students will bring home more information and consent forms later in April.

Upcoming Field Trips

Many classes are heading out of RMS to engage in off-site learning activities. These activities provide students with valuable hands-on opportunities to connect their learning to the world around them. To ensure these experiences are safe and successful, we rely on the support of parent/guardian volunteers. Volunteers need current police clearance to be able to supervise. If you do not have a current police check and are interested in volunteering, more info can be found at: volunteerCBE

More details about specific trips and volunteer opportunities will be shared by your child's teacher. Thank you for your continued support in making these learning experiences possible for RMS students!

RMS Playground

Did you know... in the next three years, the Roland Michener School playground will need to be replaced due to wear and tear? Have questions? Want to join the playground committee? Email: rmsplayground@outlook.com

Planning Ahead to 2025-26

Moving On?

If you know that their child will not be attending Roland Michener next year, please email Melanie Haniak (mlhaniak@cbe.ab.ca). This helps us to plan our staffing and class lists for next year.

Class Requests

As we look ahead to next year, teachers carefully create class lists. We work on ensuring there is a balance of student strengths and needs and personalities. Teachers are thoughtful and careful about placing students into classrooms with friends and classmates who will support their learning. Students may not get to be with all of their friends, but teachers ensure that students have friends in their next class. We value parent/guardian input into our class list decision making process. If you have a request for your child for next year, please email principal Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca). All requests must be centred on student learning, rather than personal preference. Requests for individual teachers will not be considered, rather, requests need to be focused on the most effective learning environment for your child. For example, parents/guardians might request that their child be placed in a classroom with a teacher who is easy-going, or a teacher with firm expectations. Requests for students to be placed with or away from specific students will occasionally be considered. For example, parents/guardians might request their child be separated from their cousin if they tend to get into mischief together. We will do our best to honour parent/guardian requests if they fit the parameters above, but please note that we cannot promise that all requests will be fulfilled. Unfortunately, verbal requests to teachers or administrators are not able to be considered. Please ensure you submit any requests in an email to Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca) before June 6, 2025. If you have any questions about class lists or class configurations, or organization for next year, please reach out to Terrie or Megan.
