Teacher Appreciation Week

May 5 – 9 is Teacher Appreciation Week! We recognize and appreciate the dedication of the team of teachers at Roland Michener School. Each teacher at RMS is committed to supporting student learning, well-being, and growth. Whether it is through engaging lessons and tasks, positive encouragement, or caring support, our teachers make a meaningful impact on the lives of our students. Let’s take a moment to thank them for all they do this week!

Thank-you to our School Council for generously providing our teachers with a special lunch on Tuesday!

RMS Literacy Night

We are excited to invite all of our RMS students and families to the RMS Literacy Night on Thursday, May 8 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. During this event, families will have the chance to engage in many different interactive literacy activities, develop a deeper understanding of how students build their literacy skills and understandings at school, and discover new ways to support literacy at home.

The Calgary Public Library Big Book Truck will also be at RMS during RMS Literacy Night for families to explore.

The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open to families during the RMS Literacy Night.

We hope to see all RMS families on the evening of May 8 for a fun and engaging night of literacy and learning.

Book Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at RMS during RMS Literacy Night on Thursday, May 8. Families will have the chance to browse a wide selection of books for all ages and interests, and purchase books to support reading at home. The Book Fair will be open throughout the RMS Literacy Night from 5:00pm – 7:00pm in the Learning Commons.

On Wednesday, May 7, students will have an opportunity to look through the Book Fair with their class.

Students and families are encouraged to purchase books at the Book Fair during Family Literacy Night, however students who do not attend the RMS Literacy Night will have the opportunity to purchase books at the Book Fair on the morning of Friday, May 9.

The book fair will also be open to parents/guardians from 8:00 – 9:00am on Friday, May 9.

Lost and Found

Our Lost and Found is once again full! At drop off and pick up, parents/guardians are encouraged to take a look through the Lost and Found items located on tables inside the main doors of the school. All unclaimed items will be donated after school on Friday, May 9, so please encourage your child to take a look, or feel free to stop by yourself. Thank you for your help in making sure lost belongings find their way home!

Nations Vision

Please complete and return the Nation’s Vision form ASAP if you wish to have your child’s vision checked at school next week. Please contact your child’s teacher if you require another form.

Grocery Gift Cards

Through Education Matters, our school has a limited number of grocery gift cards to support families facing financial challenges. If your family could benefit from this assistance, please reach out to Megan Ozegovic or Terrie Lay. We are here to help and ensure that every family in our school community feels supported and cared for.

 Heritage Park Volunteers Needed

RMS students have an exciting opportunity to visit Heritage Park on Monday, June 2, 2025. Students will have opportunities to learn about the history, culture, and early Canadian life through hands-on, interactive, and immersive exhibits. Acknowledgement of Risk Forms and more information about the tip will be sent home later in May.

We require many parent/guardian volunteers to make this trip a success. If you would like to volunteer, please ensure that you have completed a Police Information Check through the Calgary Police Service and that you have completed the CBE Annual Volunteer Registration form (forms are available in the main office at RMS).

By May 15, please connect with your child’s teacher if you are able to volunteer for the trip.

Planning Ahead to 2025-26

Moving On?

If you know that their child will not be attending Roland Michener next year, please email Melanie Haniak (mlhaniak@cbe.ab.ca). This helps us to plan our staffing and class lists for next year.

Class Requests

As we look ahead to next year, teachers carefully create class lists. We work on ensuring there is a balance of student strengths and needs and personalities. Teachers are thoughtful and careful about placing students into classrooms with friends and classmates who will support their learning. Students may not get to be with all of their friends, but teachers ensure that students have friends in their next class. We value parent/guardian input into our class list decision making process. If you have a request for your child for next year, please email principal Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca).

All requests must be centred on student learning, rather than personal preference. Requests for individual teachers will not be considered, rather, requests need to be focused on the most effective learning environment for your child. For example, parents/guardians might request that their child be placed in a classroom with a teacher who is easy-going, or a teacher with firm expectations. Requests for students to be placed with or away from specific students will occasionally be considered. For example, parents/guardians might request their child be separated from their cousin if they tend to get into mischief together. We will do our best to honour parent/guardian requests if they fit the parameters above, but please note that we cannot promise that all requests will be fulfilled. Unfortunately, verbal requests to teachers or administrators are not able to be considered. Please ensure you submit any requests in an email to Terrie Lay (tdlay@cbe.ab.ca) before June 6, 2025. If you have any questions about class lists or class configurations, or organization for next year, please reach out to Terrie or Megan.
